Easy Layering with Patterned Paper: Simple Cardmaking for Beginners
Have you ever opened a pack of beautiful patterned paper… and then closed it again because you weren’t sure how to use it?
You’re not alone. Patterned paper is gorgeous, but it can also be a little intimidating—especially if you’re not sure how to mix patterns, layer without clutter, or make it feel “finished.”
This week, I’m showing you how to create layered card designs using patterned paper in a way that’s easy, fun, and beginner-friendly.
Watch the video tutorial below
Why Patterned Paper Layers Work (Even for Beginners)
One of the best things about patterned paper is that it does a lot of the design work for you. It adds colour, texture, and personality—without needing extra tools or embellishments.
Plus, most paper packs are designed with coordinating colours and prints, making it easy to layer patterns that look great together.
The key is keeping it simple, so your layers add interest—not overwhelm.
A Simple Approach to Patterned Paper Layering
Let’s break it down. Here’s a basic formula you can use again and again:
1. Background Print
Choose one patterned piece to act as your base layer. This is often the largest panel and sets the tone.
2. Cardstock Mat (Optional)
Add a narrow mat in a coordinating colour for a polished, defined edge.
3. Focal Panel
Use a bold sentiment or shape layered on top—this keeps the design balanced and clear.
Here’s how it looks in action:

This card uses a floral background print with a clean white panel and bold sentiment. The result is bright, cheerful, and simple to recreate!
3 More Ways to Play with Patterned Paper Layers
Want more ideas? Here are a few different looks—all using patterned paper as the foundation.
1. Sweet & Romantic

Layer coordinating pink florals with a stitched sentiment panel. Keep the colour palette tight for a soft, cohesive feel.
2. Scenic Strips

Turn one beautiful image into multiple panels for a layered-but-flat effect.
3. Playful Circles

Punch patterned paper into shapes like circles and layer them in clusters for a fun, modern vibe.

And if you’re working with scraps, try strips!
Keep It Simple
Don’t worry about using all the patterns at once. Focus on:
- One bold print + one neutral
- Repeating colours across layers
- Leaving space for the eye to rest (white space is your friend!)
