You’ll Learn Far More Than Cardmaking as a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator
I Signed Up to Make Cards. I Did Not Sign Up for a Sneaky Education.
When I joined Stampin’ Up! back in 2009, I had exactly one goal: get the discount and make a few cards without stamping the sentiment on a slope you could use as a spirit level. That was the whole plan. I genuinely believed crafty people were born with a special gene I’d been skipped over for, so my ambitions were low and my expectations were lower.
What I did not expect was to accidentally learn a whole pile of things nobody warned me about. I sat down to make a card and somewhere along the way I picked up colour theory — why some combinations sing and others look like a toddler chose them in the dark. I learned about design balance, and why my early cards felt “off” (spoiler: I’d crammed everything into one corner and left the rest looking lonely).
Then came the one that really got me: photography. I wanted to share my cards, so I had to learn about light, and angles, and why my kitchen bench at 9pm made everything look grey and sad. None of this was on the brochure. All of it stuck.
Fifteen-plus years later, I’m still learning something new most weeks — and I’ve made peace with the fact that “just cardmaking” was never really just cardmaking.
Myth Buster
Being a demonstrator isn’t about selling products — it’s about learning and sharing creativity.
What Do You Actually Learn as a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator?
You learn far more than how to make a card — being a Stampin’ Up! demonstrator quietly teaches you a whole set of creative skills you never sat down to study. The making is the doorway; the education comes free with it.
Without ever enrolling in a course, you tend to pick up:
- Colour theory — which colours work together, and why some combinations feel calm while others feel loud.
- Design and balance — where to place your focal point so a card looks “finished” instead of lopsided.
- Composition and layering — building depth so a flat piece of cardstock stops looking flat.
- Basic photography — lighting, angles, and styling so your makes actually look as good on screen as they do in your hands.
- Simple tech and sharing — posting online, filming a quick video, or emailing a photo to a friend.
- Teaching and explaining — because the moment someone asks “how did you do that?”, you learn to break it down.
Here’s the part I most want you to hear: none of this is a born talent. It’s all learned. I’m living proof — I’m the least likely crafty person you’ll meet, and I picked every one of these up by simply showing up and having a go. That’s the whole reason I teach my Back to Basics series: the skills are teachable, and they’ll sneak up on you too.
Fun Fact
Stampin’ Up! gives you free online training and inspiration for every level — beginner to seasoned pro.
One of the loveliest surprises about joining is that you’re never left to figure it out alone. Stampin’ Up! pours real effort into helping demonstrators learn — whether you want to make one pretty card a month or slowly grow something bigger.
As a demonstrator, you’ll have access to:
- Online training and tutorials — step-by-step guidance for techniques, products, and new releases.
- A steady stream of inspiration — project ideas, colour combinations, and fresh takes when your brain goes blank.
- Product education — so you actually know how to use the goodies you own (no more mystery tools in the drawer).
- A community of like-minded crafters — people who get the joy of a satisfying die cut.
- My team support inside The Art of Simple — where I help you find your feet with simple, low-overwhelm frameworks.
You don’t need to arrive knowing any of it. You just need to be curious enough to start.
Could This Be You?
If a little voice is whispering objections, know that I’ve heard them all — and I once said most of them myself:
- “I’m not talented enough to get anything out of it.”
- “I’d need more experience before I could learn that stuff.”
- “Maybe one day, when I’m actually good…”
Here’s the truth I wish someone had handed me sooner: the learning happens because you join, not before. A year from now, you could be the one casually explaining colour theory to a nervous beginner — the same way I once watched someone do for me, thinking I’d never get there. You will. It sneaks up on you.
Ready to Join?
There’s no pressure here, and definitely no clipboard-wielding gatekeeper checking your skill level at the door. If you’re even a little curious about what you’d learn — and what joining could look like for your life — I’d genuinely love to have a friendly chat first, no commitment required.

Coming Up Next
In the next post, I’ll be busting another myth I hear all the time — You Can Grow at Your Own Pace. If you’ve ever assumed there was one big reason you “couldn’t” join, this one’s for you.
This post is part of my “Things You Didn’t Know About Being a Stampin’ Up! Demonstrator” series, where I peel back the curtain on what it’s really like to be part of the Stampin’ Up! family — one myth at a time.
